If you can answer “yes” to all three basic tests, use a very visible diagnostic. Apply a temporary transform and increase the zoom enough that the change is unmistakable. If the image changes, the adjustment clip is working and the original effect needs its own investigation. If the image does not change, keep tracing the layer, range, and selection instead of stacking more effects on top.

  8. Test the render range. Scrub across the beginning, middle, and end of the adjustment clip. If the effect appears in the middle but disappears at an edge, the issue is usually the adjustment clip’s duration, a keyframe at the wrong time, or a neighboring clip outside the intended range.

  9. Remove the test effect after the diagnosis. Once the adjustment clip visibly responds, undo the test or remove it, then add the effect you actually need. This isolates a placement problem from an effect compatibility problem.

Here is a simple arrangement that should work for a shared look:

The adjustment clip covers all four shots. It is above both the footage and the title track. If you put it on V1 beneath the shots, the adjustment clip cannot affect those shots. If you put it on V2 while a title sits on V3, the title is above the adjustment clip and may not receive the effect.

This small test also exposes a common naming mistake. A clip that looks like a normal colored bar in the timeline is not necessarily the adjustment clip you intended to use. You may have dragged a generator, a Fusion title, or a compound clip instead. Select it and read the Inspector. If the controls do not match the object you meant to create, replace it with a fresh Adjustment Clip from the Effects Library.

Why does my adjustment clip affect only one clip or skip clips?

An adjustment clip affects only the clips that are both beneath it in the video stack and inside its time range. A cut in the footage does not automatically create a matching cut in the adjustment clip, but a short adjustment clip can stop at exactly the first edit and make the effect appear to skip the next shot.

Think in two dimensions: vertical track order and horizontal time overlap. The adjustment clip must win on both.

Blackmagic’s current description says adjustment clips work “from the top down” and apply their effects to clips below. That wording matters. “Below” means below in the video track stack, not merely later in the timeline. (Blackmagic Design’s Edit page)

There is a second compositing detail. If a lower clip changes but an upper opaque clip covers it, you may not see the lower clip’s result. The adjustment clip can be doing exactly what it was told to do while the visible image comes from a different layer. Temporarily disable or move the upper layer to see which image is actually reaching the viewer.

You can also make the timeline easier to inspect by giving every adjustment clip a useful name. Use names such as “warmth”, “social crop”, or “end card contrast” instead of leaving several identical bars unlabeled. Names do not change the effect logic, but they reduce the chance that you select the wrong adjustment clip in a dense timeline.

If the effect should follow one shot through several edits, decide whether you want a time-based layer or a shot-based correction. An adjustment clip follows the timeline range. A clip-level effect follows the source clip instance. For a single shot that has been cut into several pieces, applying the correction to the source or using a suitable compound workflow can be clearer than extending one global layer across unrelated edits.

Why is my adjustment clip visible but the effect does nothing?

When the adjustment clip is in the right place but the effect does nothing, first prove that the layer responds to a simple Inspector change. If a temporary zoom or crop works, the layer is fine and the original effect is disabled, unsupported in that context, keyed outside the visible range, or dependent on data the adjustment clip does not have.

  5. Check the viewer, not just a thumbnail. A thumbnail or still frame can hide an animated effect. Move the playhead and play a short range. If the viewer changes but the thumbnail does not, the effect may be animated rather than broken.

  6. Check the clip selection after switching pages. Resolve can preserve a selection that is not the object you meant to grade or edit. Return to the Edit page, click the adjustment clip, then switch pages only after confirming the selected object.

The simplest diagnostic is deliberately boring. Use a large transform, verify that it affects the intended picture, and then remove it. That test tells you more than adding three subtle effects and hoping one becomes visible.

An adjustment clip is a shared effect layer, not a replacement for every clip-level effect or compositing workflow.

What if the effect is a plugin?

If a third-party OpenFX effect works on a normal video clip but not on the adjustment clip, test the same effect on a fresh adjustment clip in a blank timeline. Then test a built-in OpenFX effect. If the built-in effect works and the plugin does not, the evidence points to the plugin’s handling of generated or composite input, not to the track arrangement.

How do I fix a DaVinci Resolve adjustment clip not working in Fusion?

For Fusion, an adjustment clip must receive the timeline image you intend to process, and its MediaIn node must use a valid frame range. A Blackmagic forum explanation says an adjustment clip’s Fusion MediaIn sees the timeline media below it, and it documents an older frame-range bug that can begin at a very large number instead of zero. Start with the simplest Fusion test.

  1. Place the adjustment clip above one visible video clip.
  2. Right-click the adjustment clip and choose the command that opens it in the Fusion page.
  3. Inspect the MediaIn node. It should represent the timeline image below the adjustment clip.
  4. Add a small visible change, such as a blur or transform, and connect the flow correctly.
  5. Scrub through the adjustment clip, not just the first frame of the timeline.

If the Fusion composition starts at an implausibly high frame number or the available range does not match the adjustment clip, use the workaround described in the Blackmagic forum: drag the adjustment clip into the Media Pool, delete the timeline instance, then drag the Media Pool copy back into the timeline. The forum report says this resets the frame range so it starts at zero and extends to the adjustment clip’s length. This is forum guidance for a reported bug, not a promise that every Fusion issue has the same cause.

Fusion also makes the “visible result” question harder. A node graph can be connected correctly while its output is hidden by the adjustment clip’s composite behavior, an alpha choice, or another clip above it. Test with a non-transparent effect first. Once the input and output are proven, add masks, merges, and alpha operations one at a time.

If the effect is a complex graphic that needs its own transparency, custom timing, or independent media inputs, a Fusion composition or Fusion clip is usually a better fit than an adjustment clip. An adjustment clip is strongest when the task is “apply this to the composite below me for this range.” It is less suitable when the task is “build a new transparent element that should sit over the edit.”

If Fusion itself runs out of memory while you test the graph, use DaVinci Resolve Fusion out of memory error as the next troubleshooting branch. That is a resource problem, not proof that the adjustment clip is mispositioned.

Why does an adjustment clip break a fade, transition, or transparent overlay?

An adjustment clip can be the wrong tool when the result depends on transparency. If the viewer shows checkerboard or an unexpected solid field, test a short render before rebuilding the timeline. Why is temporal noise reduction not working on my adjustment clip?

Temporal noise reduction may not work on an adjustment clip because it needs neighboring frames from the source clip. A Blackmagic forum response states that temporal noise reduction is not working with adjustment clips because the effect needs access to the next and previous frames, while spatial noise reduction does work in that reported setup.
